Amidst an ocean of transient digital music releases, XDB’s upcoming single “When the Love Is Gone” serves as a bold tribute to the timeless essence of hard rock. Featuring Xander Demos’ electrifying guitar work , the track delivers a balance of melody and technical prowess, solidifying XDB’s place in the world of melodic hard rock .
Written by Rob Kane and performed by Rob Kane, Xander Demos, Brendan Callahan, Emily Stroup, and Guy Cole , "When the Love Is Gone" captures themes of heartbreak, regret, and longing , wrapped in anthemic hooks and dynamic instrumentation.
Right from the start, the song captures your attention with a guitar-driven introduction that echoes the iconic style of 70s and 80s rock icons yet revitalized with a distinct melodic complexity and contemporary flair. Lead singer Rob Kane’s reflective lyrics explore themes of loss and regret, presenting them in a manner that feels both timeless and urgent. As he delivers the line, “When the love is gone,” it evokes not only a personal sorrow but also the shared yearning of a generation seeking purpose amidst disillusionment.
Guy Cole's drum playing in this song is nothing short of exceptional, showcasing a masterful blend of technique, creativity, and emotional depth. Guy expertly transitions between intricate fills and steady grooves that drive the song forward. Each beat is delivered with precision, creating a solid foundation that supports the melodic elements perfectly.
Emily Stroup's bass playing complements this rhythmic foundation beautifully. Together, the combination of the drums and Emily's bass forms a cohesive unit that enhances the overall musical experience and provides the base upon which the guitars and vocals soar.
Brendan Callahan's rhythm guitar, along with his keyboard performance is a true testament to his musical genius. His mastery of the instrument is not just about playing notes; it's about creating an atmosphere that envelops the audience. With each press of the keys , he conjures a tapestry of sound that ranges from delicate, ethereal melodies to powerful, resonant chords that fill the space with vibrancy.
Xander Demos delivers an electrifying performance on guitar that’s as technically impressive as it is emotionally charged. His work channels the spirit of classic metal virtuosity, but with a novel twist that sets XDB apart. The band’s decision to perform the track in Drop-D tuning adds a brooding, almost cinematic quality that gives each riff a weighty, dreamlike gravitas.
Rob Kane shares the inspiration behind the song:
"It started with the intro. I had been listening to TNT's My Religion album and Tony Harnell’s Starbreaker project, and I wanted to write something that was guitar-driven but also had keys—especially in the intro. The opening riff led to the chorus, and once I came up with the line ‘When the Love Is Gone,’ the rest of the song wrote itself around that concept."
Guitar virtuoso Xander Demos adds:
"It's a catchy tune, and we've since rethought some of the ways we play it—especially with that big chorus. We perform it in Drop-D, which gives it a cool mix between TNT and Savatage."
The structure of “When the Love Is Gone” is a masterclass in modern songwriting: an instantly infectious chorus that anchors the song, followed by soaring solos and introspective verses that build to a cathartic climax. Lyrically, the song captures the fleeting nature of passion and the lingering bitterness of regret, themes that are delivered with both sensitivity and raw power. Kane’s delivery is both vulnerable and assertive, weaving a narrative that invites listeners to confront their own experiences of heartbreak.
