"That was brillient, absolutely brilliant! Really warm production. The mix is a really nice balance of instruments across the mix in this song. It's a great melodic rock song."

“When the Love Is Gone” captures themes of heartbreak, regret, and longing, wrapped in anthemic hooks and dynamic instrumentation. The track masterfully blends emotive storytelling with robust instrumentation, capturing the essence of classic rock influences while infusing a modern sensibility.
The song opens with Brendan Callahan's expressive layered keyboards that establish the theme. The song then transitions into a guitar-driven introduction that pays tribute to the distinctive sounds of bands such as Dokken and Ratt. Guitar wizard Xander Demos comes out swinging, laying down slick, expressive leads. His solos aren’t just technical flexes—they sing with emotion, driving the song’s narrative forward like a freight train running on heartbreak. Choosing to play the song in Drop-D tuning adds a moody, cinematic feel, enriching the composition's overall depth. Frontman, Rob Kane, gives a vocal performance that’s straight from the heart. He doesn't merely sing the lyrics—he bleeds them out over a battlefield of broken dreams. Lines like
“Living so close to the edge
I’m just waiting for the fall
We can’t fly on broken wings“
hit with the kind of authenticity that separates the posers from the pros. Kane’s delivery is gritty but melodic, riding that sweet spot between power and vulnerability like a seasoned vet.
Drummer Guy Cole, known for his solid timing and hard-hitting drumming, provides the rhythmic foundation of the track. Emily Stroup, adds her bass part adding to the strong rhymthmic section with just the right touch of complexity which enhances the songs emotional impact.
Kane shares the inspiration behind the song:
”It started with the intro. I had been listening to TNT’s My Religion album and Tony Harnell’s Starbreaker project, and I wanted to write something that was guitar-driven but also had keys—especially in the intro. The opening riff led to the chorus, and once I came up with the line ‘When the Love Is Gone,’ the rest of the song wrote itself around that concept.”
Guitar virtuoso Xander Demos adds:
“It’s a catchy tune, and we’ve since rethought some of the ways we play it—especially with that big chorus. We perform it in Drop-D, which gives it a cool mix between TNT and Savatage.”
At the helm of XDB is guitarist Xander Demos, an acclaimed Pittsburgh-based guitarist renowned for his blazing solos and melodic sensibilities . Having shared the stage with legendary acts like Stryper, Adrenaline Mob, Symphony X, and Lizzy Borden , as well as touring with Tim “Ripper” Owens and James Rivera , Xander has built a reputation as one of today’s most dynamic and skilled guitarists . His debut album, Guitarcadia, mixed by the late CJ Snare ( Firehouse ), showcased his exceptional technical ability and knack for crafting unforgettable hooks.
Lead vocalist Rob Kane is known for his powerful voice and masterful songwriting, drawing from the golden era of ’70s and ’80s hard rock and metal . In addition to XDB, Kane also lends his talents to bands like Love In Chains, and Apocalyptic Lovers.
